Absurder bug made sure that you could drive faster than 3 billion km/h in a racing game

The Gran Turismo series should be known to every fan of racing games. But not everyone knows the probably funniest and most absurd bug in part of the series.

What kind of game is that? Gran Turismo is a racing game series, the first part of which was published in Japan in 1997. Countless branches of the series have been published over the years, the last, Gran Turismo 7, in 2022.

In an older part of the series, Gran Turismo 3, which was published on PlayStation 2 in 2001, there was an extremely strange bug. And that ensured that you were traveling faster than any known vehicle in the history of mankind.

What kind of bug is that? With a certain combination of different settings and maneuvers, it was possible to achieve an absurd speed with the Suzuki Escudo and to put the game with problems.

This bug, which is also known as “Wheelie Glitch”, was triggered by the fact that the front wheels of the vehicle left the soil. In addition, certain settings in the aerodynamics and the settings of the vehicle had to be made.

This could happen that your vehicle was traveling at the incredible speed of 2,147,483,647 MP/H – the equivalent of more than 3.4 billion km/h. The game could not deal with this speed correctly, which led to problems in the visual representation of the car.

How that looked, you can watch in this video:

What about the number? There are so-called variables in software development. These are containers in which data could be saved. The number 2,147,483,647 is the maximum number that can be saved in a certain variable type.

In the game, the error caused the speed to be increased until the maximum value that was available for the speed was reached.

Not only bugs can ensure curiosities in racing games. Last year there was a scandal, in which a popular racing game was removed from his publisher – from the libraries of the players who paid for it: Ubisoft deletes a game from the players’ libraries – reminds us that we have nothing.
