Absolute silence has never been so scary

Absolute silence has never been so scary

The end of a horror era on Netflix is near. First released in 2016, the streaming service exclusively released director Mike Flanagan’s heart-pounding Home Invasion thriller Still. It was the start of an exciting partnership that has produced some of the best horror series in recent years. Including Haunted Hill House or Midnight Mass.

Flanagan is a horror genius who creates a special kind of horror. However, his time at Netflix is over. From now on, Flanagan is working with Amazon, where he is currently working on an adaptation of Stephen King’s opus The Dark Tower. His first Netflix post will now disappear in a few days.

  • Only briefly on Netflix: Still by Mike Flanagan is available to stream on Netflix until April 7, 2023. The film is currently not available for streaming from any other provider.
  • The Netflix horror Still captivates with high tension and unbearable silence

At first glance, Still’s plot seems like the scenario of a typical Home Invasion thriller. Writer Maddie (Kate Siegel) lives in a secluded cottage in the woods where she plans to write her next book. One night, however, a masked serial killer (John Gallagher Jr.) shows up and has chosen her as his next victim. A life and death struggle begins.

What sets Still apart from other genre contributions is the protagonist’s deafness, which gives you numerous advantages in the fight against the killer. And Flanagan’s creative and thrilling staging knows how to use this as an impressive stylistic device. Like Maddie, we experience parts of the terror in almost complete silence – similar to the horror film A Quiet Place, which was released two years later.

Maddie’s sharpened focus on what’s happening is transported directly to the audience. The unbearable silence and altered perception create one out of this Home Invasion shocker nerve wracking horror trip. And this remains constantly exciting over the entire running time of a crisp 78 minutes until the end credits.

Flanagan’s first Netflix horror is disappearing, but one series is yet to come

Mike Flanagan fans only have one last chance to get the creeps with Still again. The film was never released on DVD or Blu-ray and is currently not available on any other streaming service. There is still good news for fans of the horror master.

Before Flanagan’s collaboration with Netflix ended, he made one last horror series to be released on Netflix later this year. The Fall of the House of Usher is based on Edgar Allan Poe’s works and will once again bring together numerous familiar faces from Flanagan’s previous series and films. Look forward to a special kind of horror farewell party.
