At least 36 people were killed when a bus plunged into a gorge in the Himalayas near the northern Indian city of Almora on Monday, officials said. Several people were also injured in the accident, at least three of them very seriously.

Those injured in the accident, as well as the bodies, were carried off the bus along a human chain that had spread out on the mountainside.

Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to the families of the dead and promised a compensation of 200,000 rupees (almost 2,200 euros) to the family of each person who died in Turma.

The Chief Minister of the state of Uttarakhand, where the accident occurred Pushkar Singh Dhami said that an investigation will be launched into the causes of the accident.

Traffic accidents happen often in the Himalayan region, because the roads are in poor condition and the traffic culture often disregards the rules.
