After 58 minutes and eight failed attempts to inject a lethal poison, authorities in the US state of Idaho canceled the execution of a 73-year-old man.

He is convicted of five murders in three states and has been locked up for more than 50 years. He was wheeled in for execution on Wednesday morning US time and three people made eight attempts to insert the poison.

Idaho, if it wants to try again, must reapply to execute him.
