A weapon took the community by storm in 2023, now getting a hard nerf

In Destiny 2, the submachine gun “The Immortal” is very popular. It came into the Trials with Season 20 and immediately caused a stir, especially in combination with a certain perk. But this one will be nerfed – as will some other content in the game.

What changes? Bungie has announced a mid-season patch in a blog post. In this one, they plan to tackle some weapons that are too strong or too weak. A prominent target is “The Immortal”:

  • She came into the game in early 2023 and accounted for almost 10 million kills in the first trials weekend in Season 20, which was 9.5% of all kills.
  • It is particularly strong in PvP and in combination with the “Aim on target” perk. This grants you a 17% damage bonus if you’ve hit the same target for a few seconds in a row. Damage increases to 40% with a sustained rate of fire. The bonus is strong and above all very simple to activate.
  • If you then combine that with perks like “Impact Bullets” and “Rangefinder” for more range, almost nothing can stop you.
  • But that will be over in the future, because the perk will be weakened in PvP. Maximum damage bonus reduced from 40% to 25%. However, the PvE version remains untouched.

In addition to Aim Aim, there are also nerfs to Pulse Rifles, including the Graviton Lance, and slight buffs to Bows and Shotguns.

Destiny 2 will get the new DLC “The Final Form” in 2024. Check out the first teaser here:

Buff for 2 perks and 2 weapon types

How strong was the combo really? Mercules, one of the weapon designers for Destiny 2, explains the current situation in the blog post and shows a graphic. This shows the “Kills Over Expected” for PvP. On the x-axis you can see the usage time in percent, while on the y-axis you can see the performance. This should be as low as 0% so that it achieves the “expected performance”.

“The Immortal” and the Graviton Lance slightly exceed the value, but are used disproportionately much. That’s why the nerfs happen.

Which perks are still changing? Two perks get a buff:

  • Straight to the Pit of the Stomach: Auto-aim penalty reduced by 37.5 percent.
  • Search Party: Auto-aim penalty reduced by 33 percent.
  • Which weapons will be changed?

  • Light bow
  • Increased starting distance for default damage decay from 15m to 25m.
  • Increased the ending distance for the default damage decay from 20m to 45m.
  • ~10% increase in final precision.
  • submachine guns
  • Improvements have been made to the dynamic reticle of the Shayura’s Wrath scope.
  • Light shotguns
  • Decreased the spread angle of the outer horizontal pellets by 15%.
  • Graviton Lance
  • PvE damage increased by 67%.
  • Removed the additional aim assist provided by the Catalyst.
  • The late-game damage dealt by Cosmology Blast has been reduced by 40%.
  • No time for explanations
  • Range stat reduced by 10.
  • lion roar
  • Fixed an issue where the Chimera perk on the catalyst was not applying the buffs to kinetic and power slot weapons.
  • What’s next after the update? More changes are planned for Season 22. The main focus is on the zoom, which is to be completely revised. In addition, the highest achievable damage should be reduced for almost all weapon types. How the changes will turn out in concrete terms has not yet been revealed.

When will the mid-season patch come out? There is currently no official date. We are currently in week 6 of the season. Since the new season 22 is scheduled to start on August 22nd, the mid-season patch will probably not be long in coming.

What do you say about the changes? Are these correct or is Bungie tackling the wrong set screws? Feel free to write it in the comments.
