South Korea and China are considered the only serious teams at League of Legends Worlds 2024, and that has proven to be the case so far. FlyQuest was considered to have no chance against the Korean star team Gen.G. But surprisingly, FlyQuest played confidently and became a bright spot in the US region.
How did FlyQuest fare? FlyQuest is a US team that barely managed to get out of the Swiss stage and into the quarterfinals. The team may be the 2024 LCS champions, but the American league is generally considered to be quite weak.
In the quarterfinals of the current Worlds they met the Korean team Gen.G. The team is considered the big favorite for the world championship title. Together with LNG Esports, they are the only team that went straight to the quarterfinals 3-0.
The match was played on Sunday, October 20th, 2024 and contrary to what was expected, FlyQuest didn’t let it get them down and delivered an exciting quarter-final.
The big favorite is working up a sweat
How did the quarterfinals go for the two teams? The US team started with a victory in the first game. After less than 15 minutes, the team was able to gain a gold advantage, which they expanded. After about 30 minutes we won an important team fight and with it the game.
The second match was again strongly dominated by Gen.G and FlyQuest lost.
In the third match, FlyQuest was able to recover and defeat Gen.G. After the 2:1, Gen.G could no longer be defeated and they won the last 2 matches. Ultimately, FlyQuest lost 3:2.
Nevertheless, FlyQuest is the winner of the hearts for many fans, because with unconventional picks like Fiddlesticks and an existing will to win, the team showed that the US league still has potential. This is also shown by the comments on a Reddit thread:
Despite their defeats, FlyQuest and G2 have shown many US and EU fans that a lot is still possible outside of China and South Korea and that one should not lose sight of these leagues. Both regions have talent that can compete with the best of the best.
