a universal income soon to be tested in England

1850 euros per month for two years, without obligation of employment. These are the terms of a Universal Basic Income pilot that is due to see the light of day in the UK soon. Here are the outlines of this experiment.

With our correspondent in London, Emeline Wine

The think tank Autonomy, specialized in the world of work and at the origin of the project. It plans to select 30 participants in the town of Jarrow in north-east England and in East Finchley, a district of London. Two areas chosen for their levels of social inequality and precariousness.

The pilot should allow, according to Automony, to highlight the supposed benefits of a universal income: financial security, improvement of the quality of life and mental health… The think tank also hopes to answer some questions about the basic income . What effect on inflation and the economy? What interaction with the tax and benefits system?

However, the experiment does not yet have a start date. Autonomy is still looking for investors to finance the project, estimated at more than 1.8 million euros. Elsewhere in the United Kingdom, Wales has already paid since 2022 a monthly income of 1,800 euros, unconditionally, to 500 young people who leave child welfare. The trial is to last another two years.
