A traitor in Warhammer 40,000 is constantly being revived because his death is far too fun for a god

In Warhammer 40,000 there are several characters with … questionable careers. One of the most memorable is Lucius, a chaos Space Marine of the Emperor’s Children. Because he can write several deaths in his résumé. The reason for his constant return: Slaanesh.

The certainly best known figures from Warhammer 40,000 are the Space Marines and among these stings the primary, ie the “fathers” of the order. The really exciting and special stories can be found more often on the edge of history.

Each of you now knows Horus, whose heresy almost wiped out the empire of mankind. This is now known as general knowledge and even people who know Warhammer superficially.

However, significantly fewer people know that a sponging man Horus made a traitor in the first. And probably fewer people know a special space marine that just can’t really die: Lucius.

Lucius counts as one of the best duellers in the entire universe, who was able to defeat a number of opponents with only one archaic sword. In many fights, however, he was inferior, often with death. Only a god never wanted to leave that.

From duellant to traitor

Lucius originally comes from the world of Chemos, the former home world of the Emperor’s Children. Already in his youth the young warrior was known for his diverse talent, which later developed into an expertise in war art.

Lucius showed the penchant for sadism early on, slaughtered beggars and bandits and even “accidentally” injured his own students. Finally, his talent was recognized by the Emperor’s Children in the fight and Lucius was included in the Legion.

During the Great Brother War, Lucius and other loyal Space Marines were on Isstvan III, where Horus should be slaughtered. Out of envy on another officer, he betrayed his brothers here and finally gave himself up to his arrogance.

Fulgrim, the primary of the Emperor’s Children, finally accepted him personally to his bodyguard and from then on Lucius has become increasingly expired by the chaos-especially Slaanesh, the chaos god of the trucks, which the Emperor’s Children follow.

Lucius’ death is so exquisite that Slaanesh wants to experience him again and again

What makes the traitor so special is his death. Or more precisely: his death. Technically speaking, he died for the first time in a duel against a Dark Angel who punished him as a traitor. Here, however, he was only brought back to life by an apothecarius.

During a gladiator match, Lucius later lost Cyrius, the Lord Commander of the Emperor’s Children. His death is said to have been such an exquisite pleasure that Slaanesh himself became aware of it.

The chaos god then cursed Cyrius so that it is painfully mutated for weeks-until Lucius himself was born from his meat. Meanwhile, Cyrius still exists as part of Lucius’ armor, on which the distorted faces of all his victorious duel opponents are “immortalized”, or more precisely: caught.

The traitor returns – in his opponents or anywhere else

Since then, the same thing has happened again and again. If Lucius’ murderer felt a little pleasure in his death, the traitor was born in his opponent a little later. This even works with opponents such as the robotic Necron: one of its fighters has defeated Lucius and a new Lucius became a little later from his metal.

However, even joy in death is no longer necessary, as it seems. In the newer, official lore it says:

  • Lucius broke out of the meat of a six-arm Xenos mercenar
  • He had emerged from a pit of rotting servitors parts
  • And centuries after his death, he was revived a cryptek in the living metal.
  • Lucius was previously reborn in the body of a factory worker when he stepped onto a land mine. The general consensus in the community is: As long as Slaanesh finds it funny, Lucius comes back. Is that logical? Certainly not. But cool everyone, and that’s exactly what the fans are about: “Have misunderstood the setting” – newcomers suggest improvements for Warhammer 40,000, fans explain why they are stupid
