Novak Djokovic has won the men’s singles final at the US Open tennis tournament. The fresh championship is the 24th grand slam victory for the Serbian star.

Djokovic, seeded third, defeated the Russian, seeded second Daniil Medvedev score 6–3, 7–6, 6–3. The final match between the duo lasted more than three hours.

Djokovic will receive three million dollars for his victory, while Medvedev, who came in second, will receive 1.5 million.

After his victory, Djokovic wore a shirt in which he appears together with the American basketball star who died in a helicopter crash in 2020 Kobe Bryant’s with.

The tennis champion said that he planned to pull the shirt if he gets a chance to win the tournament. Bryant wore number 24 in his prime for the Los Angeles Lakers, so Djokovic thought it would be a nice gesture to commemorate Bryant’s 24th grand slam win. He asked his background troops for help making shirts a couple of days ago.

– Kobe was my good friend. We talked a lot about the winner’s attitude. When I was struggling with injury and trying to get back to the top, he was one of the people I leaned on the most. He was always ready to advise and support in a friendly way. When he passed away together with his daughter a couple of years ago, it hurt me deeply, Djokovic said.

Among male players, Djokovic was already the record holder with his previous 23 championships, but now he has risen to the level of Australia, who has won 24 times of Margaret Court with. Court played in the 1960s and 1970s.

With his recent victory, the 36-year-old Djokovic also became the oldest US Open male champion in the open era of tennis. The Serbian is also the first man to win three out of four grand slam tournaments in the same season.

Medvedev defeated Djokovic in the final of the US Open in 2021. This time, the Russian advanced to the final after defeating last year’s champion Spain in the semifinals Carlos Alcarazin.

During the final match, Medvedev fell early in the third set, and Djokovic rushed over the net to check the condition of his opponent lying on the court and help him to his feet.
