Taru Lahti-Liukkonen and Niina Ahtiainen a Spanish couple won the beach volley in the first elimination game of the European Championships in The Hague Tania Moreno – by Daniela Álvarez directly in two sets 21–19, 21–18 and advanced to the quarterfinals.
The victory was tasty for the Finnish couple, because they only won one match in the group stage. However, it was enough for the playoffs, and now the pair knocked off the Spaniards, who finished sixth in the tournament. Lahti-Liukkonen and Ahtiainen are the 29th ranked pair of the tournament.
Moreno and Álvarez progressed all the way to the quarterfinals at the just-ended Olympic Games in Paris. In the semifinals, they lost to a Canadian couple who survived until the final match Melissa Humana-Paredes – To Brandie Wilkerson.
