Quentin Tarantino’s use of violence is too much for some stomachs. But not for director and comrade-in-arms Robert Rodriguez (Desperado), who brought his script for From Dusk Till Dawn to the cinema in 1996. The German BPjS was less understanding. From 1997 to 2017 was the Uncut version of horror film banned from TV. It’s on TV today.

On TV: Tarantino’s horror cult started an entire franchise

Looking at the story of From Dusk till Dawn alone, you can’t think of anyone else responsible than Tarantino and Rodriguez. There, murderous brothers Seth (George Clooney) and Richard Gecko (Tarantino) kidnap a family of three (Harvey Keitel, Juliette Lewis and Ernest Liu) and flee the law in their trailer. Just over the Mexican border, they come to a bar with the poetic name Titty Twister. And from here the film really goes full throttle.

Quentin Tarantino and Salma Hayek’s foot in From Dusk till Dawn

There are horror creatures, Tarantino as a psychopathic woman killer, a biker with guns in the crotch and Salma Hayek in one of the most famous dance scenes in film history. In hindsight, the rise of a film to cult status is rarely less surprising, nor is the humorless reaction of German youth protection groups.

On the cult status of the film an entire franchise has been built over the years. In addition to the two loose sequels From Dusk Till Dawn 2: Texas Blood Money and From Dusk Till Dawn 3: The Hangman’s Daughter, three seasons of the series From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series ran from 2014. A fourth film has been on the back burner for more than 10 years.

When will the Tarantino horror From Dusk till Dawn be on TV?

From Dusk till Dawn is running this Friday, November 25, 2022, at 11:20 p.m. on ProSieben. It is the uncut version of the film, which has been shown on nighttime programs by German TV stations since 2017.
