A Tale of Two Sons Remake Review

In our Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons Remake review article, we take a look at the renewed version of an old friend from 10 years ago.

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons Remake review: One of the brand new trends in today’s gaming industry is to remake and remaster old and legendary games. Although seeing the great games of the past with graphics at today’s standards and more modern dynamics fuels the nostalgic feelings in all of us, it also enables younger people who have not yet met these legends to meet these legends. Of course, as in every issue, this issue can sometimes shift to exploiting people’s nostalgic feelings. We can see a lot of unnecessary remakes or remasters.

In my personal opinion, a remake should especially rebuild a game. A remake game that is released only with improved graphics is not a remake but a remastered one. No matter how much the graphics improve, if something is not added to the gameplay and is the same, there is a name error. Or companies beautify their work in this way.

Two Brothers with Endless Suffering

The game we have was actually released in 2013 and touched our hearts with the brother-sister drama it told when it was released. Our two siblings, who lost their mother, set out on an adventure to cure their father when he is on his deathbed, and along the way, they become more attached to each other and try to save their father by overcoming the obstacles they encounter. Of course, when the story being told is an emotional story, there is no possibility of us not connecting with these two extremely cute characters, and in every situation that happens to them, we are flooded with emotions, just as if they were our relatives.

More than the story of the game, the gameplay aspect is also quite interesting. First of all, we should point out that a gamepad is required to play the game. I haven’t tried playing with keyboard and mouse, but as stated on the Steam page, a controller is required. The reason is more interesting, you control two brothers at the same time in the game. The right stick directs the older sibling, while the left stick directs the younger sibling. In this way, you try to solve puzzles by cooperating with yourself. It may seem strange and challenging when you think about it, but it takes a very short time to get used to it. After some confusion, you quickly adapt.

There are no other mechanics in the game anyway. All you have to do is bring your character to the right interactive point and hold down the interaction button, and since the task is generally in the form of carry something, climb here, throw that, there is not much confusion in this respect. From today’s perspective, I can’t help but say that this is a minus. No improvements have been made by the producer to the puzzles and level design in the game.

The game progresses in sections in a completely linear structure. So it’s unlikely you’ll lose your way while taking care of two siblings. The game does not give you much freedom and you have to solve the puzzles in the desired way. Puzzles do not have multiple solutions, and this was the case in the 2013 version as well. Even though it seems outdated from today’s perspective, this was like a cure for me as someone who is incredibly bored with open worlds and extremely large universes.

We can say that the part where the game makes the most difference as a remake is definitely its visuals. The previous game was made with Unreal Engine 3. The remake version was prepared using Unreal Engine 5. It would be fair to say that you feel the difference in your bones. This game really needed to look amazing like this.

Even though this is called a remake, since the game basically contains platform and puzzle elements, I think these puzzles are not annoying and do not actually need an overhaul. It would have been better if the producer had made a few touches, but it wouldn’t have been a bad thing if he didn’t, because the game takes place in a small area and the puzzles are not very complicated. I think what we need to focus on is the story and presentation of this game specifically.

Speaking of presentation, I think the presentation of the game looks beyond amazing. Even though 11 years have passed, it still reflects its cinematic and drama to us very well. Also, as I mentioned, the main characters in our game are incredibly cute. Moreover, the fact that they speak a made-up language makes us pay more attention to their gestures and facial expressions rather than what they say. Naturally, the characters seem quite sweet to us. The color palette of the game is also a very clean choice in this context. It reflects this situation of the characters to us better, and thus we can connect with them better. Even though we don’t even know their names…

Conclusion

Brothers is already a very nice game in the original. If you are looking for a straight forward drama story that you can simply pass the time with and want to see it with great polished graphics, this remake is perfect for you. If you’ve heard of the game before but haven’t played it, this remake is a great excuse to taste this adventure.
