Authorities in the Central American country of Honduras have arrested a man suspected of being an environmental activist of Juan Lopez of murder. The suspected accomplice of the perpetrator was also arrested.
Lopez was murdered on September 14 as he was leaving a church in the northeastern city of Tocoa.
Lopez had campaigned against open pit mining in the area. At the press conference he held before his murder
Lopez had also demanded the resignation of Tocoa’s mayor because the mayor was accused of negotiating bribes with drug traffickers in 2013. There is reportedly video evidence of the matter.
The Inter-American Human Rights Commission had demanded security measures for Lopez and other environmentalists because they had received many threats.
