Bethesda’s new role-playing game, Starfield, has inherited much from its spiritual predecessors, the Elder Scrolls and Fallout series. However, an important “mechanic” for master thieves is not in play.
The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim is a paradise for thieves, criminals and gangsters. Unguarded objects are lying around everywhere, sometimes more, sometimes less valuable. The pockets are often full faster than I can complete a cheap side quest.
The really good stuff, however, often has dedicated guards who are careful to ensure that no greasy pickpockets use it without repercussions.
In Skyrim, however, it was often not a problem to commit theft, burglary or even murder without being prosecuted. A matching bucket solved the problem of annoying viewers. Unfortunately, this no longer works in Starfield.
What is this trick? In Skyrim, it’s possible to put a lid on curious NPCs so they couldn’t see your outrages.
A license for digital kleptomaniacs. I certainly couldn’t resist the big loaf of cheese myself.
But don’t you dare rip off Starfield’s advanced future NPCs in this way. Apparently modern sensors prevent the NPCs from needing line of sight to your… sorry… their valuables to spot you stealing.
However, part of the “feature” remains available in Starfield: hold down the “use” button and you can pick up, rotate and carry items around. So you can put buckets on NPCs, but then unfortunately you can no longer steal them without being discovered.
You also need a useful skill in Starfield for successful pickpocketing.
Luckily, the sci-fi RPG offers many paths to riches. Unfortunately, the easiest and craziest way out of Skyrim isn’t one of them.
