In South America, in Ecuador and Peru, at least 14 people died and several were injured in the earthquake, the countries’ authorities said on Saturday.

President of Ecuador Guillermo Lasso said on Twitter that the earthquake that shook the country also destroyed buildings. In Ecuador’s southwestern El Oro province, near Peru’s northern border, 11 people were reported dead. Two of the fatalities were in the northern province of Azuay.

One is said to have died in Peru. The death victim found in the town of Tumbes near the border with Ecuador is said to be a four-year-old girl.

The Peruvian Institute of Seismology first reported the magnitude of the earthquake as .0, but later refined the estimate to 6.7. The epicenter of the earthquake was off the coast near Ecuador’s largest city, Guayaquil, about 85 kilometers from Zarumilla, Peru.

The earthquake also raised floods. In some places, the water reaches up to the roofs of the houses.

Aid transport is facilitated by the fact that the Santa Rosa airport in Ecuador is still in operation.
