Alexander Zverev lost the Australian Open final to Jannik Sinner.
The men’s awards ceremony of the Australian Open tennis tournament saw an incident when the loser of the final Alexander Zverev was about to start his speech.
A scream from a female spectator could be heard from the stands, which could not be heard from the TV broadcast. After that, there was a slight booing. Zverev waited a moment and then began his speech normally by praising the winner of the final Jannik Sinner.
For example The BBC reportsthat the viewer shouted: “Australia believes Olya and Brenda.” The shouter was referring to accusations made by Zverev’s two ex-girlfriends about the German’s violent behavior.
Olya Sharypova accused Zverev of violence in 2020 and Brenda Pate of domestic violence in 2023. Zverev and Patea have a child together.
Zverev has denied both allegations. Sharypova did not take the matter to court. The ATP tour investigated the matter for 15 months but could not find sufficient evidence to support the claims.
Patea’s accusations were discussed in court, but the parties reached an agreement, so the trial was suspended last summer.
Zverev later commented on the crowd’s scream.
– He was certainly the only person in the stadium who believed in something. There are no more accusations. It hasn’t been for nine months. I have done everything I can and I will not open this matter again.
