Director Steven Spielberg made film history with Jaws. The thriller, published in 1975, is one of the Co-founders of the Blockbuster cinema and features one of the most frightening monsters in film history. Even today, films and series are inspired by Spielberg’s groundbreaking masterpiece.
Spielberg uses animal horror extremely effectively, while at the same time presenting a coastal paradise before our eyes broken down into its individual parts. Even more than the titular monster, this film is about three men with different backgrounds who end up in a boat that is far too small.
Jaws on TV today: A masterful horror thriller from legendary director Steven Spielberg
But first, Spielberg introduces us to the setting. Amity Island is an idyllic seaside resort that attracts countless guests over the summer months. Jaws – Trailer (German)
Despite the danger lurking in the water, Mayor Larry Vaughn (Murray Hamilton) doesn’t want to close the beach. Anyway the holiday season is just around the corner – the priorities are clear. But the local police chief Martin Brody (Roy Scheider) protests and goes hunting for the shark with scientist Matt Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) and veteran Quint (Robert Shaw).
We don’t even get to see the actual main attraction for a long time. Although the shark that causes Amity to panic is present from the first minute, most of the time Spielberg only hints at the troublemaker with ominous images. This creates one unbearable tensionwhich is particularly reflected in the looks of the characters, including those of the mayor, who takes refuge in excuses.
Almost more exciting than the threatening movements in the water are the observations that Spielberg makes about the dynamics on land. In about two hours, Jaws exposes America before the beast emerges and with impassive, dead eyes sends a shiver down your spine. It inexorably rams into people’s last refuge until there is only chaos.
