Sid Meier’s Civilization VII is currently in development at Firaxis Games. The game is scheduled to be released on February 11, 2025 for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam. Although the release is already half a year away, a player can’t wait long enough for the title to be released. The reason for this is heartbreaking.
What kind of player is this? In the Reddit forum, user JordantheGnat asks that his father be allowed to play Civilization VII before the official release. He has been a fan since Sid Meier’s Alpha Centauri in 1999, if not since the first Civilization in 1991.
Normally, the user would not ask for something like this, but there is a good reason why he decided to ask.
What is the reason? His father is suffering from stage 4, or terminal, pancreatic cancer. Doctors believe he only has a few months to live. The son is therefore concerned that his father will not survive until the official release of Civilization VII.
So he took the opportunity and asked on the Reddit forum whether there was a way for his father to be able to play before everyone else. He actually got a response from the developer and can now hope.
The following trailer for Civilization VII reveals which game the father really wants to play:
Long-time Civ fan may play Civilization VII before anyone else
Was he successful? A user named Sarah, who is a community manager at Firaxis Games, responded to his request. She wrote to the son that he should send her a private message. Unfortunately, we do not know how the story ended at this point.
But we assume that the developer studio responded with the intention of letting the father experience Civilization VII before his death.
How do the other fans react? In the comments, the community is happy that the father’s wish could be granted. User soumisseau, for example, writes that Firaxis is “one of the good guys” and should therefore allow it.
User JulioCesarSalad writes that he would be proud to give his money to this company if customers in need were treated this way. Another user named DreamweaverMirar even bought the Founder’s Edition for 129.99 euros because of the campaign.
Another player was also battling cancer and was afraid that he would miss the release of Baldur’s Gate 3. But at the release of the game he had a happy message for the fan community: Fan was afraid of not seeing the release of Baldur’s Gate 3 – beats cancer just in time for the release
