THEY TESTED MOSQUITOES
According to a new study published in the journal Nature Communications; Researchers from the University of Washington monitored the behavior of female Yellow Fever Mosquitoes after being given different types of visual and olfactory cues. The researchers put the mosquitoes in small test chambers and exposed them to different things, like a colored spot or a human hand.
HOW DO Mosquitoes FIND FOOD?
If you do not know how mosquitoes find food; First, they sense that you are around by smelling carbon dioxide from your breath. The researchers explained that this required them to scan for specific colors and visual patterns that could indicate food.
ONE COLOR ACTIVES MOSQUITOES
In the absence of an odor such as carbon dioxide in the test chambers, the mosquitoes pretty much ignored the colored dot, regardless of its color. But when the researchers sprayed carbon dioxide into the room, they flew towards the dots that were red, orange, black, or cyan. Dots that were green, blue, or purple were ignored. Mosquitoes reacted to the color red, targeting it first. According to experts, red is the shade of color mosquitoes see when they look at the skin.
DON’T PREFER DARK COLORS!
If you know you’re going to an area where mosquitoes are plentiful but have the option to wear lighter or darker clothing, experts recommend choosing lighter-colored clothing.
