“A shame” – An update makes a really good game unplayable and the community is not happy

Ubisoft is going through a difficult time that doesn’t seem to be ending. The next problem now comes in the form of a Windows update that is causing crashes and black screens for some Ubisoft titles. The community is frustrated and shows this by review bombing a game that is actually popular.

Which game is unplayable? This is Assassin’s Creed Origins. It was released in 2017 as a “reinvention” of the Assassin’s Creed series and enjoyed great popularity. For a long time it had a “very positive” overall rating on Steam.

Players take on the role of Bayek and his eagle Senu and explore ancient Egypt, which is the origin of the Assassins. But the fun ended a few weeks ago because the game cannot be enjoyed without crashes, freezes or black screens.

Windows update causes frustration among Ubisoft players

How does this happen? The reason for this is a Windows update, more precisely the 24H2 update of Windows 11. Microsoft released this a few weeks ago and has resulted in the performance of certain games being significantly affected.

Other Ubisoft games are also affected by the problems:

  • Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
  • Assassin’s Creed Odyssey
  • Star Wars Outlaws
  • Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora
  • The community is angry: Players express their displeasure over the problems with Assassin’s Creed Origins through review bombing.

Review bombing is the practice of leaving negative reviews on platforms like Steam en masse to express their anger and dissatisfaction. The negative reviews do not have to have anything to do with the quality of the game, but rather serve as a means for players to vent their frustration.

The review bombing of Assassin’s Creed Origins has resulted in the game’s overall rating on Steam being downgraded from “very positive” to “balanced” (via steam).

The reviews are directed more towards Ubisoft:

  • Hard-Joe says (via steam): “It’s a shame that Ubisoft doesn’t pay attention to its old games.”
  • Zorax says (via steam): “Steam should seriously remove this game from the store.”
  • hellionb finds (via steam): “Ubisoft has been ignoring this problem for 3 months without a solution.”
  • Potato is also angry (via steam): “Good game, but DON’T BUY IT!!!”
  • It is not yet fully clear who is to blame for the problems. Ubisoft is trying to find out the cause of the crashes and is also working on hotfixes for the games. This already worked with Star Wars Outlaws, but it is still pending with other games.

There is a discussion within the community about who is to blame for the disaster and who is responsible for the repairs. For example on X:

The only solution so far is to not download the update or to undo it.

Even if Ubisoft is not to blame for these problems, it does not reflect well on the game developer’s already shaky reputation. In addition, Ubisoft could soon sell Assassin’s Creed because the bosses fear a takeover by a Chinese company.
