How messy Marvel productions and how harassing DC shoots can be is probably common knowledge. A satirical look at the filmmaking nightmare of Superhero franchises is launching a new series from today by Armando Iannucci (The Thick of It, Veep), Sam Mendes (1917) and format creator Jon Brown (Succession).
The format is appropriately called The Franchise and is celebrating its US debut on the US broadcaster HBO and its streaming service Max. The German premiere takes place at the same time.
The Franchise takes aim at superhero productions à la Marvel and DC
In The Franchise, Himesh Patel, Lolly Adefope and Daniel Brühl are part of a stressed, disillusioned film team. Together they and their stars (Richard E. Grant, Billy Magnussen and Co.), who are also on the verge of madness, have to make the latest entry in one overused cinematic universe with superheroes on their feet, while the studio, as Big Brother, lights fire under their proverbial asses in constant observation mode.
Whether the whole thing is one rather a loving reckoning with superhero franchises or a harsh criticismwill be shown at the start of the series. Formats that have already targeted the big business with costumed heroes in the past include the series version of Irma Vep and the superhero satire The Boys, which at the same time wants to be a tough version of superhero stories.
