An 800kg milk whale was spotted in the Seine River in France last week. It has apparently swum 130 kilometers along the English Channel.
A milk whale that got lost in the Seine River in France was lifted from the water early on Wednesday in the first phase of the rescue operation, reported news agency AFP.
After almost six hours of work, the 800-kilogram whale was lifted from the river into the net and with the help of a crane onto the barge at five in the morning Finnish time.
The whale is taken to a seawater pool for treatment and released later.
Vala is being treated by a dozen veterinarians.
130 kilometer swimming trip
The whale was spotted in the river last Wednesday. It had swum 130 kilometers inland from the English Channel.
According to the expert, the animal is severely malnourished and may have internal ailments.
Milk whales usually move in the cold waters of the north, and although they move further south in autumn to look for food, they are rarely seen this far south.
