A secret NPC in Baldur’s Gate 3 is waiting for you in prison

Players are still discovering new content in Baldur’s Gate 3 after over 700 hours. A fan introduces the NPC Marvin, a talking skull, and causes astonishment. He also warns directly: anyone who talks to Marvin can get into big trouble.

This is the NPC:

  • Marvin is a talking skull that you can meet in the Dragon Keep Prison in Act 3.
  • However, you can only meet him if you end up in jail yourself. If you visit the dungeon without being an inmate yourself, Marvin will not speak to you. Your character then simply makes a comment about the skull.
  • Unlike the secret companion “Us”, Marvin only fulfills one function, but with a little trick.
  • What can Marvin do? The skull is there to provide your character with a way out. There are usually several ways to escape if you’ve been locked up. No matter what prison you are in, you can somehow escape.

Normally this works through tests of skill or strength, for example by picking a lock or tearing down a wall. Depending on what your character is good at, you can escape in some other way.

Marvin is one of those solutions for which you need arcana. As Reddit user Theownerer7 explains, Marvin asks you a few puzzles. If you solve it, he will buff you with haste and invisibility so that you can easily escape. If you fail…he will teleport you right next to the guards.

Nice side info: If you play a bard, i.e. the best class in the game, you can simply sing a song to the guard, as a user on Reddit explains. She then comes, listens and forgets to lock the door again.

Also in Act 3 you will find the secret Dinoland with a unique item:

    “I already love Marvin”

Marvin is extremely well received on Reddit – especially because most players probably miss it. In order to end up in prison in Act 3, something has to go wrong and most players will probably just reload.

Thanks to the new, hard mode without saving, players now notice new content that they could previously avoid by “save scumming”. Marvin is one of them. A user with supposedly over 750 hours in the game asks excitedly, “What the hell can I miss in this game?” What is that? What is Marvin? Where is Marvin? When is Marvin?”

The discussion about Marvin has sparked comments about how an awful lot of content Baldur’s Gate 3 has that hasn’t been discovered even after hundreds or thousands of hours. One reason why the role-playing game is well received by so many fans.

After the makers themselves thought that perhaps 100,000 players would actually play, Baldur’s Gate 3 became a huge success shortly after its release – and was named game of the year a short time later. Afterwards, studio boss Swen Vincke even thanked the fans again in detail.
