A role-playing game on Steam has 93% positive reviews, combines anime with Cthulhu horror, but hardly anyone knows about it

Like every year, countless role-playing games appeared on Steam in 2024. In addition to the big names, there are also little insider tips that tend to get lost. One of them is Depersonalization, which gets fantastic reviews even though hardly anyone knows about it.

What is depersonalization? Depersonalization is a Chinese role-playing game on Steam from the small studio MeowNature. It is their debut work and presents itself visually in a pixel look that is most reminiscent of beautiful RPG Maker games.

The character and creature designs are reminiscent of a mix of cosmic horror and anime. This should also be reflected in the presentation and the story. According to the developers, they were inspired by Call of Cthulhu role-playing games.

Specifically: Players can expect cultists, grotesque monsters and an overarching threat that is difficult to understand.

Cosmic horror in anime form

What should the gameplay offer? Although visually reminiscent of JRPGs, Depersonalization is more oriented towards pen-and-paper gameplay. You have to roll the dice and there are several endings that offer different fates for the characters.

You should be able to create your own characters and progress through the story through exploration. Unlike a JRPG, stat progression is always tied to the story. The different values should then enable you to have other story events.

How is the game doing on Steam? On Steam, the game currently has a fantastic rating of 93% positive ratings from 4973 reviews. The players particularly praise the mix of anime and Lovecraftian horror:

  • ThatOneOtherIdiot: A great hidden gem of a game. It’s heavily inspired by Call of Cthulhu, and it plays like a TTRPG
  • Berukastel: An immersive Lovecraftian RPG with rich customization options, great expansion potential and addictive gameplay that delves into cosmic horror.
  • HNTMC: Rich story and there are frequent updates, need to improve some things in English but the rest is a solid game.
  • Is there a bad aspect? As user HNTMC writes, the game still has an English translation that needs improvement. As PCGamer explains, you first have to manage to set the game to English. To do this you should click on the second option in the main menu and then click on the first option on the right.

How much does depersonalization cost? You can still get the game on offer on Steam for €13.65 until January 2nd. Otherwise the game costs €19.50. Fans of Lovecraftian horror have been able to enjoy many games on the subject in recent years. An upcoming game might appeal to Pokémon fans: A new game on Steam is like Pokémon, but in a dark world with monsters from horror films
