What makes it difficult is that everything has to be able to stay in place for the next fifty years. “That means that you feel like you have to remove more work than you actually want to,” says de Wild. “I think we’ve succeeded quite well in that. We were able to leave most of the medieval work that we found. You don’t want to be the restoration that removes all the original material, so we were very careful about that,” says the restoration architect. “But it hurts to remove the original work. No matter how small the pieces are, it always hurts.”
