Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne announced that the renegotiation of the 1968 Franco-Algerian agreement was “on the agenda”, in an interview with Figaropublished Wednesday evening, December 6, explaining that “we have requests and the Algerian government has some on its side.”

This Franco-Algerian agreement on immigration, signed on December 27, 1968, gives Algerians several favorable immigration conditions in France, such as the simplified granting of residence permits, facilitated family reunification or even automatic regularization of Algerians without -papers after ten years of residence in France.

An agreement denounced by Edouard Philippe

This system is often denounced by the French right as well as part of the majority, judged as “obsolete”. Last June, in the columns of L’Express, it was former Prime Minister Edouard Philippe who declared that he wanted to “question” this agreement. “The reasons which led to the negotiation and adoption of this agreement and the current situation lead me to think that it is time to go back,” he then detailed, explaining that “no national of a no other State benefits from such advantages.
