A record number of Swedes want to keep cash in the future

A record number of Swedes want to keep cash in

Our society is becoming more and more digital and both grocery stores, clothing stores and cafes have stopped accepting cash payments.

Now Verian, formerly Kantar Sifo, on behalf of Cash machine conducted a survey on the Swedes’ view of cash and cash payments in particular.

Cash at home? Then you MUST do this: “Important”

More than eight out of ten Swedes want to keep cash

Verian has carried out this survey every year since 2018. The question is the same: whether the Swedes want cash payments to be possible also in the future or whether they want a completely digital society.

In this year’s survey, the number of people who wanted to keep cash in the future had increased sharply.

As many as 83 percent of Swedes answered that they want to keep cash, which corresponds to more than eight out of ten Swedes and is a record high figure, which also Cash machine reported on.

When the survey started in 2018, only 68 percent wanted cash in the future.

– We at Bankomat clearly see that cash withdrawals from our machines are rapidly decreasing. But despite the fact that fewer and fewer Swedes use cash, more and more people want to keep cash as a means of payment. You can see that there is a great social need for cash handling to work, says Johan Nilsson, marketing manager at Bankomat AB.

Those who answered that they wanted to keep cash as a payment method also in the future had to justify their answer and state the most important reason for their position.

The expert: Then the cash can disappear in Sweden

That’s why Swedes want to be able to pay with cash: “Crisis preparedness”

At that time, a full 51 percent believed that cash was good to have as “crisis preparedness”, 29 percent indicated that “freedom of choice” was a reason why they wanted cash in the future as well.

– There is a strong societal need for functioning cash management. However, as a result of people’s reduced demand for cash, many companies that offer cash services have reduced or ceased operations. Now the state needs to take financial responsibility for the most vulnerable parts of cash handling, says Johan Nilsson.
