A record many want to become officers – the need continued large

The interest in training as officers is record -breaking.
In total, over 3300 people this year applied to become an officer, specialist officer or reserve officer.
At the same time, recruitment needs are great.

It is Friday afternoon at Karlberg Military University. Kajsa Toftner goes the second semester of the three -year officer program and is so far satisfied with his choice.

– It was like a natural path and the officer training gives a good breadth, a good leadership training and many very interesting topics, she says.

Record two years in a row

The officers program has two years in a row set a record in the number of applicants. In 2023 it was 1,045 applicants and this year the same figure was 1,317 and 28 percent of applicants were women.

– It feels great. This means that all those who work with recruitment and try to find these young adults who can choose a future defense task have done a fantastic job, says Stefan Smedman, Colonel and Head of the Education Department at the Armed Forces.

Previously, an officer deficiency has been reported, but according to Stefan Smedman, the number is beginning to correct himself.

– There is a lack of skills at levels, but we are starting to get the numerical order and we reach the goals that we have set out and calculated.

Many prospective pensioners

At the same time, many officers will be retired within the next few years, the recruitment needs are still great according to Stefan Smedman.

For Kajsa Toftner, her experience of military service was crucial to her continued commitment to the defense and she believes it is an important part of attracting more.

– It is crucial because it is the first thing you meet in the Armed Forces. That you enjoy the military service and feel that you learn something it is very important for you to continue. This is where you recruit. Everyone starts there.
