In July 2022, MGM lost the Tomb Raider rights, bringing with it the sequel was officially dead. In an interview with Variety in May 2023, leading actress Vikander looked back on the defeat.

I thought, we would have the green light [für Tomb Raider 2] receive. Direction and screenplay were fixed. For me it was a childhood dream. It was so cool to bring an action figure to life. I could never have imagined that. I especially enjoyed the physical part. I would be there again in a heartbeat if the opportunity for something like this arose.
