Bad Sci-Fi Copy: Planet Dune rides along Dune’s sandy wave

The production company The Asylum is known for copying successful blockbusters as “mockbusters” with low budgets, be it with Transformers copies like Transmorphers or with the Dune blend Planet Dune, which is shown on TV today. That the quality is under bad effects, stupid stories and embarrassing characters suffering is of course part of it.

What is the science fiction movie about? On the planet Dune, contact with a previous crew has been lost. Therefore, Astrid’s (Emily Killian) team is sent to the sandy celestial body. But their rescue mission doesn’t go as planned: Stranded in the strange world, they become the prey of the most dangerous species there: the aggressive giant worm.

Planet Dune – Official Trailer

Planet Dune sweeps the political nuances of Dune completely under the carpet of desert sand. Instead of aristocratic houses, religious intrigues and the power struggle for resources, the Asylum film focuses entirely on the gigantic sandworms that lurk beneath the surface. Which is why the film is more reminiscent of In the Land of Rocket Worms in the end, despite the copied sci-fi title.

As icing on the cake, Planet Dune also won for its cast Sci-Fi icon Sean Youngwho not only rose to fame as the replicant Rachel in Blade Runner, but also starred in David Lynch’s first film adaptation of Frank Herbert’s desert epic (as Paul’s great love Chani): Dune.

By the way, if you missed Planet Dune on TV but still really want to see it, you can also stream it on Amazon Prime*.
