A really bitter sci fi defeat for Ryan Reynolds

Ryan Reynolds’ career has picked up speed significantly in recent years. Known for annoying comic book adaptations like X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Green Lantern a decade ago, the tide has now turned. Reynolds is one of the most sought-after stars in Hollywood.

Just last year he landed one with Free Guy and Red Notice remarkable double whammy, conquering both the big screen and the streaming landscape. The disappointing sci-fi thriller Self/less from 2015 should have been forgotten by Reynolds by then.

  • Today on TV: Self/less is on ZDFneo tonight at 8:15 p.m. The repetition follows at 05:35. Alternatively, you can stream the film with various purchase and rental options on Amazon Prime Video *.
  • Ben Kingsley sneaks into the body of Ryan Reynolds in the sci-fi thriller Self/less

In Self/less we meet Damian Hale (Ben Kingsley). He’s a billionaire and has dedicated his entire life to work. He even sacrificed his relationship with his daughter Claire (Michelle Dockery) to expand his empire. But then he will with one confronted with a cancer diagnosis. For the first time, the powerful are vulnerable.

The mysterious Albright (Matthew Goode) draws Damian’s attention to a process that will allow him to transplant his mind into a new body. Before he knows it, he’s running into the figure of a young man through New Orleans who looks suspiciously like Ryan Reynolds. Of course, there is a catch.

Despite Ryan Reynolds, Ben Kingsley and Tarsem Singh: Self/less was a sci-fi failure

Based on the premise, Self/less sounds very promising. There are numerous sci-fi movies engaging with the relationship between body and mind deal with. There is also an interesting director behind the project: Tarsem Singh, known for the visual impact of The Fall and War of the Gods.

However, Self/less disappointed both artistically and financially. Little of Singh’s handwriting can be found. The film works immature and interchangeable. It’s no wonder that, with all the competition, it fell short at the box office and went down in Reynolds’ filmography as a flop.

On a budget of $26 million, Self/less grossed just $32 million worldwide. In its home country, the United States, the film only brought in 12 million US dollars, which is a lot for the studio disastrous record was. Last but not least, the budget didn’t even include the marketing costs. Podcast: The best series starts in August
