For a while, adaptations of children’s books with a fantasy or sci-fi twist sold like hot cakes. The 5th wave with Chloë Grace Moretz showed that the tide had turned. An already planned franchise disappeared into oblivion. Today the sci-fi flop is on TV.
On TV: “Sloppy” sci-fi flop brought down an entire franchise
The story based on the book by Rick Yancey actually sounds very exciting. Aliens have taken over the earth in four waves of destruction so far. These included global catastrophes such as power outages, plagues and mass murder. As stricken humanity prepares for Wave 5, Cassie (Moretz) searches for her little brother Sam (Zackary Arthur). And meets young Evan (Alex Roe).

But it turned into a bad flop when it came to criticism (via Metacritic). Rotten Tomatoes calls him”limp and imitated” and gives it a 15% rating. Rolling Stone describes him as “a dystopian bankruptcy“ and writes that he sells “the same blah blah blah that made Twilight and Divergent phenomenal.”
