Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo was hurt in Monday’s quarter-finals of the European Championship against Slovenia when he remained without a goal despite numerous positions.
Ronaldo was offered the keys to the solution when he scored a penalty in the 105th minute. Ronaldo tried to place in the bottom right corner, but Oblak guessed right and blocked the shot.
After the situation, the follow-up match went to a break and Ronaldo broke down in tears. During the short break, he wept openly in the middle of the Portugal players’ circle, but still continued on the field until the end of the match.
Before this, Ronaldo had succeeded in 13 consecutive penalty kicks.
Most of Portugal’s attacks already in the first half ended with a pass in Ronaldo’s direction. The star forward shot a total of eight times. Many of Portugal’s crosses flew narrowly over the head of the leaping Ronaldo.
The best situation of the game came two minutes before full time, when he ran away from the goalkeeper Jan Oblak’s with. However, the shot from a small angle did not surprise the Slovenian.
Ronaldo also tried a direct goal from four free kicks, but to no avail. The first free kick went right over the goal with great force, the second, on the other hand, bounced off Oblak’s glove save. In the end, the ball ran away from the goalposts.
In addition, Ronaldo had his own fight with an Italian referee Daniele Orsatoa against. The Portuguese captain repeatedly complained about Slovenia’s possible fouls. Orsato also moved the ball to his desired spot in the free kick situation without asking, after Ronaldo had already settled down to pick up the pace.
The situation made the Portuguese smile in the referee’s direction.
Luckily for Ronaldo, Portugal emerged victorious from the match in an exciting way. After 120 minutes of play, we were in a 0-0 situation, after which we went to a penalty shootout. Ronaldo was Portugal’s first shot and fired a perfect spot into the bottom left corner.
Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa saved all three of Slovenia’s penalty kicks, allowing Portugal to win the penalty shootout 3–0 and advance to the quarterfinals. In return, it receives France.
Ronaldo’s unusually long streak without a goal in the competition stretched even further.
