An airplane has crashed into the sea in the sea area between Sweden and Latvia, with which no contact could be made. The crash site is in the sea area near Ventspils, Latvia.

In Sweden, a Cessna 551 was spotted approaching the country on Sunday evening, and no contact was made with the four people on board.

The Austrian private plane that departed from southern Spain should have landed in Cologne, Germany, but for some reason it continued its journey north.

Based on the observations of the Spanish, French, German and Danish fighters that flew close to the plane in turn, no one was seen on the plane. Apart from the pilot, no one else on the plane responded to contact attempts.

The plane was first assumed to fall into the sea near the Swedish island of Gotland after running out of fuel. Later, however, the plane turned towards Latvia.

The plane first flew at an altitude of about ten kilometers, but then quickly lost altitude and circled before falling into the sea.

Parts of the Swedish Coast Guard plane that flew to the crash site have been found in the sea. Everyone on board is believed to be dead. The handling of the case is now the responsibility of the Latvian authorities.

The reason for the incident is not yet known. German Bild magazine (you switch to another service) according to which the pilot would have reported problems with the plane’s pressurization before losing contact. Bild reported that there was “a pilot, a woman, a man and a daughter” on board.
