No matter whether in the films or books – Sirius Black from Harry Potter doesn’t have it easy. First he sits in prison for a long time, then he has to lead a life that is tantamount to further imprisonment. According to some fans, JK Rowling’s careless treatment of her characters is to blame.
Spoiler alert: We reveal details about Sirius Black and his history in the article.
Who is Sirius? Sirius Black is a popular character among fans of Harry Potter and was introduced in Part 3, “Prisoner of Azkaban.” There he initially appears as the titular prisoner and is considered extremely dangerous.
As it turns out, however, he was the victim of a scheme by his old friend Peter Pettigrew and wrongly ended up in Azkaban prison for 12 years. After he and Harry become closer, Sirius reveals that he is his godfather.
The relationship between the two grows in parts 4 and 5, but ends with the untimely death of Sirius at the end of “The Order of the Phoenix”. He is also one of the strongest members of the order.
According to fans, author JK Rowling was anything but squeamish about the character. Because his suffering didn’t end even after Azkaban.
A life of apparent freedom
How was Sirius? After escaping Azkaban, he didn’t feel much better. As a fugitive criminal, he obviously couldn’t move freely in the world. That’s why he usually hid at 12 Grimmauld Place, in his family’s house. Thanks to the Fidelius magic, the building is hidden and virtually invisible.
This is where Sirius spent his time and left the premises to the Order of the Phoenix as a meeting place. However, it was by no means a life of freedom. The narrow, dark house with the family portraits brought back unwanted memories of the past. In the end, the hideout became just another prison, and the character became increasingly mentally ill.
Sirius could have had it much better. On reddit, fans of the Harry Potter series are irritated as to why JK Rowling didn’t reach into his magical bag of tricks to make Sirius’ miserable life easier.
User OptimalCheesecake163 suggests using a polyjuice potion that allows you to take on the form of another person. So Sirius could have gone outside transformed and unrecognized – normally this would only have been possible for him in the form of his Animagus. But that would have frightened any accidental witnesses, because Sirius appears transformed into a frightening dog.
Another suggestion is to use an invisibility cloak and become invisible. You can see that Rowling had a few options, but consciously decided against them. Sirius shouldn’t lead a normal life – this is met with incomprehension by some fans.
What do the fans think? On Reddit, some users try to explain Rowling’s decision:
In any case, it is a part of the story of Harry Potter that continues to raise questions years after the books and films were published. What do you think about that?
