A Pokémon alternative on Steam kept me busy for over 200 hours

The Steam Summer Sale is currently underway and there are some bargains there again. Among them are some tips for fans of the Pokémon games. MeinMMO editor Nikolas Hernes can recommend a very special one, as he has spent countless hours in it.

What game is it? Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth is a classic JRPG in the Digimon universe. Depending on the game, you play a detective or a hacker who has to find out why Digimon are appearing everywhere.

The focus of the game is mainly on catching and breeding Digimon and that is exactly what captivated me so much.

I feel like in person

The game is not only visually based on Persona, but also in the breeding mechanics. There is no catching like in Pokémon, you can load Digimon if you have seen them often enough. The different Digimon can also be further developed.

But this doesn’t always happen based on level. The many Digimon don’t just have one possible development, but several that are based on the Digimon’s stats. If you want to develop your Digimon into a certain one, you need the right values.

This aspect kept me hooked for hours. Like in Persona, I always wanted to have the strongest (or simply coolest) monster for my troops. To achieve this, you have to breed, reverse engineer and train the Digimon properly. This was a really relaxing experience with music or a podcast.

The gameplay also contributes to this, as it is a very simplified JRPG system. There are rounds and in each round you attack with three Digimon. To make sure the grind doesn’t get too boring, there is a button to speed everything up. This meant that it was often a nice way to relax in the evenings by leveling up and breeding a few Digimon.

Perfect for anime fans

If you’re a fan of classic anime tropes, you’ll feel at home with the story and characters. None of this makes the game particularly unique, but it was the perfect comfort snack. The music is also fantastic and fits in with the Persona vibe.

Admittedly, the dungeons are pretty boring, but I never found that to be a problem because the dungeons were mostly very short and with the right Digimon you can avoid random encounters.

The game is perfect for people who aren’t averse to turn-based combat and for players who love building their team in such games. It’s just the perfect game if you want to relax with a podcast or video.

How much does the game cost? You can get the game on Steam for €8 until July 11th. The package includes both Cyber Sleuth games, which should keep you busy for almost 100 hours just with the main story. If you interact with the games more deeply, you can easily manage twice that.
