A player plays Baldur’s Gate 3 for the first time and finds it mediocre

There are many ways to play through Baldur’s Gate 3. But is there a wrong one? A Reddit user talked about a friend and his gaming experience – the community can only shake their heads about it.

Which player is it about? The user Dabohl spoke up on Reddit with a special story. It doesn’t affect him, but a friend who ventured into Baldur’s Gate 3.

Daring because, according to Dabohl, this friend doesn’t normally play games of this kind. Over the next few weeks, the friend repeatedly reported on his experiences. And then one day he suddenly quit the game.

Anyone who has played Baldur’s Gate 3 knows: it takes time. Some even take a lot of time, like MeinMMO editor-in-chief Leya Jankowski. Or you can be really fast, like the various speed runners.

The friend in question does not belong to either group. Nevertheless, Reddit user Dabohl was surprised when he saw on Steam that his friend had completed the game in just under 60 hours.

The friend got help from the internet

How did the friend play the game? Dabohl wanted to know exactly and asked. How could his friend finish the game so quickly?

Apparently this is due to several factors. On the one hand, the friend used the accumulated knowledge of the Internet and made powerful builds. He also researched where the best items could be found, making many fights easier.

Some encounters with opponents were very easy for him – others were very difficult. Then Dabohl became suspicious. As it turned out, his friend ignored any side quests and stubbornly followed the main quest.

This meant that his character was simply underleveled at certain points in the game. According to his own statement, he killed the final boss by sending the “bomb guy”. This refers to the companion Gale.

Spoilers for Act 2 of Baldur’s Gate 3 follow.

How does Gale help against the “final boss”? At that point, at the latest, the scales fell from the Reddit user’s eyes. Anyone who knows Gale’s story knows that there is an option to blow him up at the end of Act 2. This kills the final boss, the Absolute, and the game ends immediately.

But you don’t see Act 3 and the eponymous city of Baldur’s Gate. Neither does about a third of the rest of the game.

This ending is mostly chosen by speedrunners or people who really want to see Gale explode. The Reddit user’s friend probably thought he was making it easy for himself. And he also thought that was the actual end of the game.

Overall he was left unsatisfied. He judged Baldur’s Gate 3 to be a mediocre game. The difficulty would fluctuate too much, there would be little to do, and after barely 60 hours it would be over.

The community can laugh about it

How do other players react to the story? There are many comments under the post on Reddit, sometimes more, sometimes less seriously, about the “wrong” style of play:

  • “So he played a game called Baldur’s Gate without having seen Baldur’s Gate,” writes Ok-Worldliness-7374.
  • “What surprises me is: how can you not ask yourself what happens if you don’t select the bomb option?” asks OblongShrimp.
  • “People like that don’t roleplay, they do a speedrun and then complain that the game wasn’t long enough or fun. “And that’s after they willfully ignored all the fun stuff,” says Bloodthistle.
  • “Wait, he did extra research, but wasn’t surprised that he didn’t reach level 12 (maximum level)?” writes Kazodex.
  • In fact, the player doesn’t seem to have paid much attention during his playthrough. It’s definitely an amusing story.

And maybe he will give the game a second chance after this first experience. This time with all the side quests and the entire story: Baldur’s Gate 3 puts enormous effort into delivering a good story even to those who play like a wrecking ball.
