It was the DGSI, the General Directorate of Internal Security, which foiled this planned attack. The first aimed directly at the next Olympic Games of Paris 2024.

The suspect is a young 18-year-old Chechen who arrived in France with his parents in 2023. He was considering violent action against the Geoffroy-Guichard stadium in Saint-Étienne, which will host Olympic football matches next July.

According to a press release from the Ministry of the Interior, this attack targeted spectators and members of the police and the young Chechen wanted to die as a martyr.

The suspect was arrested at his home, after he had already carried out reconnaissance. While in police custody, he precisely denied having carried out reconnaissance and having planned an attack. It simply recognized exchanges and conversations on encrypted messaging applications.

He was indicted for terrorist conspiracy with a view to preparing crimes of personal injury. He is placed in pre-trial detention.
