A picture softens and reminisces the tough veterans of day 1

The shooter series Destiny has been around since 2014 and some people are longing for the old days in 2023. On reddit, a user has now shown a photo that brings back memories of the past. Day 1 players are blown away.

How about nostalgia in Destiny?

  • When the first Destiny was released for PlayStation3/4 and Xbox 360/One in 2014, it was something like new territory for many console players. Because Destiny was the first shooter that combined typical MMO mechanics, as known from WoW, with the shooter elements of Halo. Along with GTA 5 and ESO, Destiny ushered in a new era of MMO on console.
  • For console players, Destiny was a new experience. Only a few knew something like “lockdowns”, dealers who only come once a week, “gear resets with the expansion” or raids like “The Glass Chamber”.
  • Now, a picture on reddit triggers a flashback to 2014.

Pizza, beer and the raid in Destiny

What is this picture? Reddit user “Loose-Adhesiveness” posted on Saturday 7/1. posted a picture on reddit:

  • Apparently in a cozy living room there are 6 televisions spread wildly across the room in a semicircle. An open backpack can also be seen.
  • On each of the screens you can imagine a keeper in all his glory. Cables, consoles and controllers are scattered all over the room. In the foreground of the picture you can see what looks like the golden combination “pizza and beer”.
  • Apparently, 5 guardians came to a friend’s house to pass the 6-person raid in Destiny together in a LAN party. The post is headed “The good old days”.

    How are the comments?

The most praised comment is, “The best part was, you could snap at the guy right next to you for screwing up a mechanic we’ve done 100 times.”

One user is a little sad when he sees this: “I once did a Kings Fall raid in LFG where half the group was at a LAN party. I felt so left out even though I was in the raid with them.”

A third user just asks “Crota LAN cable glitch?”

Because that’s also part of Destiny’s “golden age”: You could easily kill Boss Crota if the raid leader simply pulled the lan cable at the right moment. Then the boss was defenseless.

You never forget the first raid in your MMO

Why does the picture grab so many? The early days of an MMO, especially the “first MMO”, when everything is new, becomes something like “the golden age” for many MMO players over the years: the companions you had back then and the experiences you shared still years later. The many bugs, exploits, server downs, balance accidents and things like “the loot cave” disappear in retrospect and are suddenly no longer wild.

For many, discovering an MMO, its world, and its mechanics for the first time is the most intense time of a gaming life.

Because Destiny was the first time of this kind for many shooter players on consoles, looking back, Destiny’s early days are surrounded by a “golden shimmer”: Later games like The Division or Anthem no longer had that, because many players knew them Mechanics yes, just from Destiny.
