US President Joe Biden is under fire after commenting on the high-profile and heavily criticized “garbage” joke at Donald Trump’s campaign rally in Madison Square Garden during a video call with Latino voters.
When the conversation turned to comedian Tony Hinchcliffe’s joke at Trump’s rally, where he called Puerto Rico “an island of garbage,” Biden said Puerto Ricans in his home state of Delaware are “good, righteous people” and continued:
– The only rubbish I see floating around is his supporters. His demonization of Latinos is unconscionable and un-American, he said.
The White House says that Biden spoke unclearly and that it was the joke about Puerto Rico itself that was meant and not Trump’s supporters.
Later, the president signed X:
“Earlier today, I referred to the hateful rhetoric spewed by Trump supporters at the Madison Square Garden rally as trash – which is the only word I think is reasonable to describe it. His demonization of Latinos is unconscionable. That’s what I was referring to,” Biden writes.
