A new TV series on Amazon is ideal if you like “The Boys” and “Guardians of the Galaxy”

The US series “Peacemaker” has been running on Amazon Prime in Germany since September 1, 2024. MeinMMO series expert Schuhmann says: The series is much better than it has any right to be. Anyone who is currently missing “The Boys” should treat themselves to Peacemaker. You have to see it just for John Cena. The series is really fun.

This is how Peacemaker begins: Peacemaker, who was seriously injured in “Suicide Squad,” considers himself a superhero. The rest of the world sees him as a trigger-happy killer with questionable views on morality and decency.

Peacemaker is released from the hospital, breaks into his trailer, and picks up his best friend from his racist supervillain father: a bald eagle named Eagley. He also stocks up on new equipment. Dad has made him new superhero helmets.

Peacemaker should actually be serving another 25 years for murder and can’t believe he’s free. But it’s quickly made clear to him that he can only stay free if he joins a special unit and carries out secret operations on behalf of the US government.

But this special unit isn’t really top-notch, because it consists of agents who have fallen from grace and his trigger-happy superfan Vigilante. He just can’t get rid of the sociopath. After so much time in prison and hospital, Peacemaker wants to do the most important thing first: drink beer and sleep with a woman. But that’s where the trouble starts.

The intro to the Peacemaker series is a real eye-catcher:

A snappy and colorful mix that is really fun

This is the sound of Peacemaker: The tone of Peacemaker is exuberant, colorful and full of joy. Wrestler John Cena in particular is clearly enjoying his role every minute of the film.

Cena plays a character who is willing to kill as many people as necessary, as long as it is for “peace.” A crude philosophy that Peacemaker adopted as a child and has never questioned since.

The series is neither harmless nor completely silly, but rather offers biting allusions time and again. Peacemaker is looked at strangely for his reactionary macho views, for example when he discusses that a woman’s breasts are too big to be called “sugar tits”, but “cheeks” is absolutely fine.

The plot of the series is exciting, the action scenes are great and the pounding soundtrack, which consists mostly of 80s glam rock, is really fun.

This is the highlight: Peacemaker is visually impressive, with great ideas such as the eagle and the imaginative antagonists who you quickly get to know. The series has some clever ideas for its action sequences and the dynamics between the characters. Above all, Peacemaker’s relationship with the individual characters and how they change over the 8 episodes of the series has more depth than you might think at first glance. Characters who are actually highly problematic, such as his “white supremacist” father or the psycho sidekick Vigilante, are particularly exciting partners.

The many allusions and wordplay in the dialogues are particularly fun. Peacemaker is also excellently cast.

In addition to John Cena himself, Danielle Brooks, known from “Orange is the New Black”, and the “Terminator” Robert Patrick are convincing. But the “super characters” like Vigilante and Judo Master are also really fun. The various insults that the small martial arts specialist Judo Master has to listen to are creative.

Vigilante is an unusually amoral sidekick.

Do you need to be familiar with the DC Universe for Peacemaker? No, that’s not necessary. Peacemaker is set in the universe of Superman and Batman and there are some references to the heroes – poor Aquaman in particular has to suffer. But no prior knowledge is necessary to enjoy Peacemaker.

MeinMMO editor-in-chief Leya Jankowski considers Peacemaker to be one of the very best series of 2022 and discusses Peacemaker in a podcast.

Peacemaker is as humorous as “Guardians of The Galaxy” from the same maker

Who is the series ideal for? If you like “The Boys,” you’ll feel right at home in Peacemaker. Peacemaker isn’t quite as dark in tone or as bloody, but it takes up some of the themes from “The Boys” and also shows superheroes who have difficulties with the moral code.

The general tone of the series is reminiscent of Guardians of the Galaxy, and Peacemaker seems like the meaner, more muscular version of Starlord in some situations. No wonder, Peacemaker is the work of James Gunn, the writer and director of all three Guardians of the Galaxy films and also of The Suicide Squad.

Peacemaker has been running on Amazon Prime since September 1st. The first season has 8 episodes. A second season is planned for 2025.
