A new stat shows the 10 games with the most active players in 2022

Leksand extended the winning streak beat AIK

The big data company newzoo sees itself as the market leader for data relating to gamer and gaming statistics. The company has now presented its figures for the 2022 gaming market and an interesting statistic shows that the top 10 service games almost exclusively include old games.

2022 is coming to an end and there are annual reviews everywhere – on TV, on gaming sites, YouTube – and of course the appropriate statistics should not be missing.

In the gaming sector, “newzoo” is considered a reliable source for data relating to the market. The company recently released its final guidance for 2022, revealing some exciting things along the way.

Included was a list of the top 10 games by MAUs – Monthly Active Users. The value is particularly interesting for service games that want to last longer or for years on the market.

A “MAU” counts if you log into a game at least once a month:

– So a player who plays a game every single day in February but not the rest of the year counts as “1 MAU”
– A player who only logs into a game once per month counts as “12 MAU”.

So the statistic measures the number of “loyal players” rather than “extremely active regular players.”

The list shows the value of the MAUs in November 2022 and reveals: Only Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 / Warzone 2 are represented as a new game in the top 10. Otherwise, only old titles are included, some of which have been running for more than 10 years:

Top 10: Games after MAUs / November 2022

  • Fortnite-2017
  • Minecraft-2011
  • GTA Online – 2013
  • CoD MW2 / Warzone 2 – 2022
  • CoD MW / Warzone – 2019
  • ROBLOX-2006
  • Apex Legends-2019
  • Rocket League-2015
  • Fall Guys – 2020
  • FIFA 22 – 2021
  • The stats prove once again how important established brands are in gaming.

Gaming shrinks in 2022 after years of growth on Playstation, Xbox and mobile – but not on PC

If service games start with a small or big hype and can establish themselves, stable and even increasing sales are possible over the years. Multiplayer phenomena such as Fortnite, Minecraft or GTA Online show this again month after month.

And even sequels can build on the success of a service game if you create the right environment. Call of Duty gets it right almost every year – but FIFA 23 didn’t quite make it past its predecessor this year.

Overall, the global gaming market shrank by around 4% in revenue in 2022. After the strong Corona years, the high inflation rates in 2022 and an economic downturn, this is nothing unusual.

The last few years have been extremely strong for gaming, despite several shifts and a currently shrinking market. Many gamers have returned or gotten into gaming for the first time in lockdown.

In the multiplayer area in particular, there were an incredible number of release postponements in 2022, which we can look forward to in 2023: The 10 most exciting multiplayer games that were supposed to be released in 2022 but have been postponed
