And this time it will no longer be a question of tests, but of their official entry into service in order to track down vehicles that make too much noise.
In France, driving a vehicle that is too noisy is punishable by a fine. Many cities are increasingly monitoring noise pollution, a source of inconvenience for residents. Two years ago, seven cities in France welcomed a new radar, recognizable by its large antenna and its numerous sound sensors: Paris, Nice, Toulouse, Bron, Saint-Lambert, Rueil-Malmaison and Villeneuve-le-Roi . At the time, these prototypes, developed by several companies, only recorded the noise emitted by each vehicle on city roads, most often on portions limited to 30 or 50 kilometers/hour. Information provided by The Point reveals that one of the devices, the Hydra sensor from Bruitparif, will soon obtain approval, probably in spring 2025.
What does this mean? That this new sound radar will be able to be deployed on the roads with the possibility of fining motorists and motorcyclists. The device, capable of linking the vehicle with the noise it emits and photographing the license plate of all those who exceed the authorized standard, will therefore be able to detect the first offenses within a few months. And it will be better not to make too much noise near the Hydra because the fixed fine will be 135 euros, reduced to 90, for all drivers of vehicles that are too noisy.
The State, which wishes to hunt down noise pollution caused in particular by modified exhaust pipes, most often the prerogative of two-wheelers, had decided, at the end of the experimental phase, to set the limit at 85 decibels. limit not to be exceeded. During tests carried out in 2022, around 1% of vehicles passed under the radar sensors made too much noise. Before an undoubtedly expanded deployment, notably in Nice and Toulouse, the Hydra will be established in the city of Paris as well as in Villeneuve-le-Roi (Val-de-Marne), Rueil-Malmaison (Hauts -de-Seine) and in the community of communes of Haute-Vallée de Chevreuse (Yvelines).
