A new champion has to be changed after less than 6 months because professionals are just too good

In League of Legends there are always champions that are played much better by professionals than by normal players. This is also the case with the relatively new champion Aurora. But it seems to be going a bit overboard because it is being massively changed.

What is it about? Aurora is a relatively new champion, released on July 17, 2024. Even before the release, professional players feared the champion’s potential. Even back then, there was a fear that their mobility and the many options in experienced hands would become a problem.

It started out quite successfully in the normal range, but things are now looking different. If you look at the statistics on U.GG, she’s not doing that well. In the midlane, she has a win rate of just 48.3% based on all ranks.

But if you paid attention as a viewer at Worlds 2024, you would notice that Aurora was banned quite often. At the main event, she was the most banned champion with a whopping 65 bans. No matter who played, the professionals were afraid of her.

Riot doesn’t seem to like that very much. In the next patch, Aurora will undergo massive changes.

The big topic in LoL currently is Arcane:

Riot Lead Designer says: Aurora has 2 problems

What’s the problem with Aurora? Aurora’s upcoming changes were commented on by Lead Champion Designer Squad5 on x.com. He explains that Aurora currently has 2 problems. On the one hand, Aurora is too heavy. Learning Aurora should be of medium difficulty, but currently it is only suitable for players with a high level of skill. This pushes the win rate down.

The second problem is the professional area. Even if her current condition is weak, she is still a high priority in e-sports. The coming changes are intended to solve both problems.

What will be changed? The changes are almost like a mini-rework, because every ability is adjusted:

  • Passive
  • The spirits you collect no longer give you movement speed
  • Q ability
  • The Q ability will now automatically reactivate when the duration is over
  • The cooldown is increased
  • The range is increased
  • The base damage is increased
  • W ability
  • The cooldown is no longer reset after a kill or assist
  • If you activate the W ability, you now also get movement speed
  • The cooldown is reduced
  • E capability
  • The range is increased
  • Ultimate (R ability)
  • You no longer get movement speed, just the movement speed of the W
  • Enemies are no longer trapped, but are instead slowed when they leave the area
  • Ultimate duration is increased
  • The changes are intended to make it easier for poorer players to use the ideas behind their abilities. Above all, positioning with Aurora is simplified due to the improved range.

However, the change to the ultimate will likely make Aurora weaker at high ranks than she is now because you can run out. Previously, you were trapped in the area for the duration of the ultimate.

When will the changes come? The changes come with patch 14.23. The patch is expected to be released on November 20, 2024.

How the changes will affect Aurora will only be seen a few weeks later. In the professional field, you won’t see their relevance until next year. Another champion is supposed to help beginners learn the game, but that doesn’t seem to work: player says that despite hundreds of hours, she’s still terribly bad at LoL – and it’s a champ’s fault
