A new electoral commission in the perspective of regional futures. The National Assembly elected Thursday, March 24, 2022 the new members of the CENI. They are 17, 7 are from the majority party, UNIR, 7 others are presented as being from the opposition. Two seats go to civil society and one to the administration.

For Brigitte Ameganvi, member of Synergie Togo, a civil society association of the Togolese diaspora in France, this CENI is clearly favorable to the majority party:

Of the 17 members of the Ceni, we can say that there are really three members of the opposition, “true”, all the other parliamentary opposition parties are in fact allies of the Unir regime which already has 7 seats. But let us recognize that the current configuration of the Ceni is the consequence of the boycott by the opposition united at the time within the C14, of the legislative election of 2018, therefore the Unir party finds itself in a very overwhelming majority. »

Brigitte Ameganvi recalls that the important issue to come for the CENI is the establishment of regional elections: “ What you need to know is that the issue, the regional elections, are in perspective. The date has not yet been set, but they are of paramount importance because it is the regional elections that will define the members of the Senate, at least for the part of the members of the Senate who are elected. So the stakes are high and you understand that the regime in place wants to do everything possible to lock in the results of this election. »

For his part, the Secretary General of the majority party in the Assembly, UNIR, welcomes the establishment of this “ independent structure responsible for organizing the elections in Togo “. Aklesso Atchole indicates that the texts which frame the election of this new Ceni are the culmination of a consultation process of several months, which brought together all the political parties which participated in the last elections.

The new members will soon be sworn in before the Constitutional Court.
