A new accessory will become mandatory from July 7, 2024.
It is a European regulation which aims to improve safety for those who travel by car but also for pedestrians. But it risks costing us dearly. Indeed, from July 7, 2024, new car models must be equipped with a camera monitoring the driver, capable of detecting moments of inattention or drowsiness.
This driver distraction warning device, called ADDW, is “a system that helps the driver continue to pay attention to the traffic situation and warns the driver in the event of distraction” according to the European regulation. It will activate when the vehicle is traveling above 20 km/h. It will warn the motorist when he takes his eyes off the road for more than 3.5 seconds when traveling at more than 50km/h. Below this speed, the system will activate when taking your eyes off the road for more than 6 seconds. These devices mainly monitor the face and “measure” it at different points: the position of the head, its orientation and especially the eyes, such as the speed of closing the eyelids or blinking.
New technology will increase the price of new vehicles, which will become even more expensive. The cost will certainly be passed on to customers. The sum could even increase further, because manufacturers will probably be tempted to add a device controlling the volume or brightness of the screens when a warning is issued to the driver, estimates the French equipment manufacturer Faurecia. According to experts, the new mandatory camera monitoring the driver will increase the price of cars by around 300 to 500 euros.
This deadline of July 7, 2024 applies to all newly approved vehicles, that is to say new models that will arrive on the market. Those that are already on sale or have been purchased will benefit from a grace period until July 2026. Beyond the camera, six features will be mandatory for new vehicle approvals from July 2022 and for vehicle registrations. new vehicles from July 2024: the pedestrian and cyclist detection system when starting (MOIS), the blind spot information system (BSIS), the reversing detection system (REIS), adaptation Intelligent Speed Monitoring (ISA), Driver Drowsiness and Attention Warning (DDAW) and Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS).
