A mission in Cyberpunk 2077 is currently traumatizing thousands of players because it feels like a real horror film

The mission “Somewhat Damaged” in Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty is currently traumatizing thousands of players. What should actually be a relatively self-explanatory escape quest quickly turns out to be an absolute horror trip, inspired by some of the best horror films of all time.

Spoiler alert: Below you will read spoilers for the story of Phantom Liberty, the expansion to Cyberpunk 2077.

What is Somewhat Damaged about? The mission follows “Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos” if you sided with Solomon Reed in “Firestarter”. Your new task is to prevent Songbird from escaping and hand her over alive to the care of the NUSA.

But Songbird has no interest in going with you and escapes through the wall in a stolen MaxTac transporter. You follow her with your V and examine the area.

What makes the mission so traumatic? As you follow Songbird’s tracks, you have your own pursuer on your heels: a spider-shaped Cerberus robot. So you try to complete your tasks in the dark twilight, but you have to expect an unexpected and deadly visit from the cyborg at any time.

The mix of oppressive and cramped environments coupled with the time pressure and the constant but unpredictable danger posed by the cyborg turn the simple chase mission into an absolute horror trip.

Songbird will help you out here and there, but otherwise you’ll only have your instincts to survive. The robot makes itself noticeable through tripping steps and a glitch in your interface. But if you try to hide, that can end badly for you: The mission level includes many supposed hiding places and dead ends that the robot patrols.

In the video, Idris Elba, the actor who played Solomon Reed in Phantom Liberty, has a few tips for your playthrough:

Reddit user about the new Cyberpunk 2077 mission: “I peed my pants”

The community celebrates the mission even though, or precisely because, it really scares them. Several Reddit users draw direct comparisons to the video game Alien Isolation. Another compares the mission to the 1994 horror film Death Machine.

Most of the time, however, the users are happy to have completed the mission. Many write that they wouldn’t have done it if they had known they had to work their way through a horror level. Still others report headaches and a strong need for a break.

Have you already completed the mission “Somewhat Damaged”? If so, how did it go for you? Or did you choose Songbird in “Firestarter”? We look forward to receiving your feedback.
