This is how Oculus begins: Oculus begins with a young man being released from the psychiatric hospital where he has spent half his life. The doctor advises him to contact his sister, but his mental health is above all else. Seems like strange advice, but the doctor knows what he’s saying.
Freshly released, the young man wants to start his life anew and seeks distance from the past that brought him 10 years of therapy and psychiatry, but his resolute sister (Gillan) has other plans: She wants to prove to the world that their father is not a crazy murderer and for that she needs her brother’s help.
He looks at his sister somewhat sympathetically; 10 years of therapy would have been good for her to process everything they experienced as children. With his newly gained psychotherapy knowledge, he explains to his sister everything she misunderstood and misremembered.
But the experiment his sister is planning will quickly test his newly acquired, clear view of the world.
