A 50-year-old German man has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of a 20-year-old gas station employee, who he shot dead after a dispute over a mask.

The murder in the small town of Idar-Oberstein in western Germany shocked the country when it took place last September.

The man allegedly admitted to the police that he got angry when the pub assistant refused to sell him beer because he was not wearing a face mask, which German covid regulations required at the time. The 50-year-old left the pub but returned half an hour later and shot the 20-year-old in the head, before fleeing. The man then handed himself over to the police after a larger manhunt was launched.

In addition to the murder, the man is also convicted of illegal possession of weapons.
