All of Cuba lost electricity on Friday due to a fault in the country’s largest power plant.
In Cuba, efforts have been made to restore electricity after the outage that affected the entire island on Friday. Electricity has been restored to, for example, large hospitals in the capital city of Havana.
However, the majority of the country’s 10 million inhabitants were still without electricity early Saturday Finnish time.
The state-owned electricity network company UNE says that it aims to start up at least five oil-powered power plants during the night, which would make it possible to restore electricity to wider areas as well.
The entire island nation of Cuba went dark on Friday, when the country’s largest Antonio Guiteras power plant experienced a so far unknown fault.
Power outages are common in Cuba, which is suffering from an economic crisis. This week, however, the country has seen exceptionally large-scale outages, which have caused power outages of up to 20 hours in some provinces.
On Thursday, the Prime Minister of Cuba Manuel Marrero announced that there is an “energy emergency” on the island.
According to the authorities, the reason behind the extraordinary outages is, among other things, the fuel shortage caused by Hurricane Milton.
